Suzanne A. Brenner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Anthropology at the University of California, San Diego. She specializes in sociocultural anthropology with a focus on gender, sexuality, religion, and politics in Indonesia and the United States. Her research examines how gender and moral issues intersect with political and social change. Her current work explores conservative Christian perspectives on marriage and morality in the U.S., contrasting with prior studies on Islamic movements in Indonesia and women's roles in socio-political shifts. She earned her PhD from Cornell University.
Her major publication, The Domestication of Desire: Women, Wealth, and Modernity in Java (1998), won the Harry J. Benda Prize. She is preparing a new book titled Marriage and Morality in America. Brenner’s work bridges cultural, religious, and political anthropology, addressing themes of modernity, morality, and social transformation.
Her research has been published in leading journals like Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute and American Anthropologist. She has received prestigious awards for her contributions to Asian studies. Brenner’s interdisciplinary approach integrates ethnographic methods with critical analyses of gender, religion, and power in transnational contexts.
