Dr. Susy S. Ziegler is a Professor and Department Head of Earth, Environmental and Geographical Sciences (EEGS) at Northern Michigan University (NMU), serving as Associate Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences. She joined NMU in 2010 with expertise in physical geography, biogeography, environmental education, and human-environment interactions. Her research focuses on boreal forests of the Great Lakes and Scandinavia, forest disturbance dynamics, and climate impacts on ecosystems. She holds a B.A. from Dartmouth College and M.S./Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
Dr. Ziegler teaches courses including Physical Geography, Environmental Science, and capstone research projects. She co-directed Faculty-Led Study Abroad programs in Brazil's Lower Amazon Basin (2015, 2017, 2019) and oversees the NMU Hoop House project. Her research involves faculty-student collaborations, such as aerosol concentration studies at Granite Island, Michigan.
Her scholarship emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches to environmental challenges, including anthropogenic landscape changes, forest management, and educational technology integration. She authored/co-authored over 20 peer-reviewed papers and books, with recent work on the Anthropocene concept and boreal ecosystem resilience.
Dr. Ziegler sponsors NMU’s Gamma Theta Epsilon chapter and advocates for outdoor exploration through photography and cross-country skiing. Her work bridges ecological science with community engagement, contributing to regional sustainability initiatives and conservation policy.
