Professor Mary Gagen is a physical geographer specializing in climate change and environmental science at Swansea University. She holds a position in the School of Biosciences, Geography and Physics within the Faculty of Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on understanding environmental change impacts on forests, particularly through tree ring analysis, carbon/water cycle dynamics, and paleoenvironmental records. She conducts fieldwork in boreal forests of Fennoscandia and tropical rainforests of Sabah, Malaysia, funded by organizations like the Research Councils UK and WWF.
Professor Gagen teaches modules in climate science, paleoenvironmental techniques, and scientific outreach. She leads the Swansea S4 outreach program, aiming to increase STEM accessibility for underrepresented groups. Her work bridges academic research with public engagement, emphasizing the societal relevance of climate science.
Her research outputs include high-impact studies on atmospheric drying trends, Amazon rainforest resilience, and innovative methods in dendrochronology.
