Sushma Reddy is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics (Cardiology) at Stanford University School of Medicine with dual appointments in the Cardiovascular Institute and Maternal & Child Health Research Institute (MCHRI). She practices clinically at Stanford Medicine Children's Health and holds leadership positions as Research Director of Cardiovascular Intensive Care and Director of the Pediatric Heart Center Biobank at Lucile Packard Children's Hospital.
Dr. Reddy's educational background includes:
- Medical Education: Rajah Muthiah Medical College and Hospital Annamalai University, India (1998)
- Residency: Children's Hospital of Michigan, MI (2004)
- Fellowship: Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital, NY (2008)
- Fellowship: Children's Hospital Boston, MA (2009)
- Board Certification: American Board of Pediatrics, Pediatric Cardiology (2018)
Her research program focuses on understanding the cellular mechanisms of right heart failure in congenital heart disease patients, particularly those with tetralogy of Fallot and single ventricle physiology. Unable to routinely obtain heart biopsies from patients, her laboratory pioneered Multi-Omics approaches to analyze plasma signatures and develop non-invasive biomarkers for disease monitoring and risk stratification. Her work increasingly emphasizes myocardial mitochondrial and vascular dysfunction as potential therapeutic targets, bridging basic science with clinical applications through the Pediatric Heart Center Biobank she directs.
Analysis of Dr. Reddy's recent publications reveals a cohesive research trajectory centered on right ventricular failure mechanisms across multiple congenital heart conditions. Her work consistently integrates proteomics, microRNA analysis, and advanced imaging to identify non-invasive biomarkers that correlate with clinical outcomes. The research shows progression from basic mechanistic studies toward translational applications, with growing emphasis on therapeutic implications of findings related to oxidative stress, vascular dysfunction, and cellular signaling pathways in right heart failure.
Dr. Reddy has received numerous professional recognitions:
- Clinical Science Research Award Nomination, Stanford Department of Pediatrics (2022)
- Alwin C. Rambar-James B.D. Mark Award Excellence in Patient Care Nomination (2022)
- Pediatric Fellows Poster Award, Columbia University (2006)
- Women in Cardiology Travel Grant, American Heart Association (2005)
- Young Investigator Award Finalist, American Academy of Pediatrics (2005)
As an academic mentor, Dr. Reddy serves as Postdoctoral Faculty Sponsor for researchers including Sushrima Gan and Ankit Kushwaha, and as Research Mentor for the Pediatric Cardiac Research Initiative in Imaging to support Mentoring (PRIISM) program. Her administrative leadership includes the Anne T. and Robert M. Bass Faculty Scholar position at MCHRI (2021-2025) and Clinical liaison role to the Basic Science and Engineering program at the Heart Center.
Dr. Reddy directs the Reddy Lab, which maintains the Pediatric Heart Center Biobank and conducts translational research on right heart failure mechanisms. The lab's work bridges basic science discovery with clinical applications through collaborations with the Cardiovascular Institute and MCHRI, focusing on personalized approaches to monitoring and treating congenital heart disease patients as they transition into adulthood.
