Susanne Theodora Schmidt is a Professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at the University of Geneva. Her research focuses on crustal alteration processes, metamorphic petrology, and fluid-rock interactions in high-pressure-low-temperature settings. She leads the Petrology and Volcanology research group and is involved in international collaborations. Current projects include thermal evolution studies in Patagonia, metamorphic analysis in Swiss nappes, and gemstone zircon dating.
Teaching includes courses in optical mineralogy and metamorphic processes. She supervises PhD and master’s students in metamorphic geology, tectonics, and geochemical studies. Administrative roles include membership in the Commission de l’égalité. Over 50 peer-reviewed articles document her work on phyllosilicate mineralogy, contact metamorphism, and subduction zone dynamics.
Key research themes: low-temperature alteration, high-pressure metamorphism in Ile de Groix, and structural analysis of fold-and-thrust belts. Her work bridges field studies, petrographic analysis, and isotopic dating techniques. Current supervision includes Annette Süssenberger’s Patagonian thermal evolution project funded by Projet FN 20021/149232.
Publications span metamorphic petrology, geochemistry, and applied mineralogy. Teaching materials include mineralogical microscope techniques and sedimentary basin analysis. Active in fieldtrips and international geoscience education programs.
