Susanne Michl is an Assistant Professor at the Institute for History, Philosophy and Ethics of Medicine within the University Medical Center Mainz, Johannes Gutenberg University. She holds a doctoral degree in History from Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen (2006) and has held research positions at institutes in Tübingen, Greifswald, Göttingen, and the Max-Planck Institute for Human Development in Berlin. From 2011-2012, she served as Interim Professor for Medical Ethics and History of Medicine in Göttingen.
Her research focuses on bridging cultural studies and biomedical practices through Medical Humanities, emphasizing narrative analysis in clinical contexts. Current work examines WWII trauma narratives from elderly Germans via a clinical study/internet therapy collaboration with the Berlin Center of Torture Victims. She seeks to develop interdisciplinary methodologies applicable to both social sciences and clinical medicine.
Key areas of expertise include the history of emotions, ethics in medical practice, and the intersection of trauma studies with biomedical research. Collaborations involve psychologists and clinicians to explore narrative-based approaches to post-traumatic stress disorder.
