Susanne Kriemann is a Professor of Code & Image in the Faculty of Media Art at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design (HfG Karlsruhe). She maintains dual academic positions as a visiting lecturer at NYU Berlin and is co-founder of the artist initiative AiR Berlin Alexanderplatz in Berlin.
Her research examines photography within social history and archival frameworks, conceptualizing the world as an analog 'recording system' for human-caused processes. Kriemann's distinctive methodology involves creating pigments from materials under study and applying them in image production techniques. Her work engages with radioactivity and mining, archaeology, and the concept of slow violence, reflecting her interdisciplinary approach that bridges artistic practice with scientific and historical inquiry.
Kriemann's work has been exhibited internationally at venues including KunstHausWien Museum Hundertwasser, Tavros Athens, CCA Montreal, Kunsthalle Wilhelmshaven, and the Diriyah Biennale in Saudi Arabia. Her work has also featured in 'Mining Photography' at the Museum für Kunst und Gewerbe Hamburg and 'Image Ecology' at C/o Berlin. Since 1998, she has published seventeen artist books that document her artistic research.
Her teaching methodology emphasizes developing students' critical awareness of form, content, materials, and collegiality while fostering sustainable approaches to media. She instructs on the full technical range of analog and digital recording systems through seminars, workshops, field research, and studio visits, beginning with an expanded concept of drawing with light.
