Susannah Nevison is an Assistant Professor and Director of the English and Creative Writing Program at Sweet Briar College. She holds a B.A. in English from the University of Southern California, an M.F.A. in Poetry from Columbia University, and a Ph.D. in English Literature and Creative Writing from the University of Utah. Her work bridges poetry, nonfiction, and critical analysis, focusing on intersections of language, identity, and medicine. Nevison’s research emphasizes the power of art to critique culture and illuminate human experience, particularly through explorations of disability, incarceration, and bodily autonomy.
Her publications include three poetry collections: *Teratology* (2015), *Lethal Theater* (2019), and *In the Field Between Us* (2020, co-authored with Molly McCully Brown). These works have garnered awards such as the Charles B. Wheeler Poetry Prize and the Lexi Rudnitsky First Book Prize. Her essays and poems appear in *The New York Times*, *The Los Angeles Review of Books*, and *Crazyhorse*, among others.
Nevison teaches courses such as *Literature and Landscape* and *Philosophy and Literature*, emphasizing creative and critical engagement with form, ethics, and societal structures. Her recent work critiques the American prison system’s medical practices and explores collaborative storytelling around disability. She resides in Virginia with her family and dogs.
