Prof. Dr. Susanna Zimmermann serves as Professor of Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, Faculty of Science, University of Basel. She returned to her alma mater in February 2025 after previously holding a professorship at the Mathematical Institute of the University of Paris-Saclay.
Her research specializes in birational geometry and the study of Cremona groups, which are fundamental mathematical structures that help understand complex geometric shapes and their transformations. These groups consist of birational transformations of projective spaces and play a crucial role in classifying algebraic varieties and analyzing their symmetries. Her work contributes significantly to theoretical mathematics with potential applications across various scientific domains.
Professor Zimmermann completed her doctorate at the University of Basel in 2016 before embarking on her international academic career. Her return strengthens the university's research capabilities in pure mathematics, particularly in algebraic geometry.
