Susanna Zimmermann is a Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Informatics, Universität Basel, with a detachment at the Institut de Mathématiques d'Orsay, University of Paris-Saclay. Her research focuses on birational geometry, Cremona groups, and real algebraic geometry. She holds editorial roles at EpiGA and Gazette, and has received prestigious awards including the 2024 ICBS Frontiers of Science Award and the 2020 CNRS Bronze Medal. She actively organizes conferences and workshops, including the annual Lectures Sophie Kowalevski and events under the ERC Saphidir project. Her teaching includes geometry courses at the University of Basel. Zimmermann is also an ambassador for science outreach initiatives like the Maison Poincaré and Fête de la Science.
Research interests encompass birational geometry, Cremona groups, algebraic groups, and real algebraic geometry. Her work explores normal subgroups, group structures, real forms of algebraic varieties, and applications in birational complexity. Recent projects include studies on Mori fiber spaces and K-stability in Fano varieties. She collaborates internationally, leading research groups and mentoring postdocs like Eduardo Alves da Silva and Pascal Fong.
Publications highlight contributions to Cremona group topology, decomposition of birational maps, and geometric group theory. Her work bridges algebraic geometry with topology, number theory, and applications in mathematical outreach. Zimmermann’s ERC-funded research explores connections between birational geometry and real Fano varieties, supported by Swiss and French institutions.
