Dr. Susanna Cereda is a Researcher at the Institute of Archaeology, University of Innsbruck, specializing in microarchaeology and geoarchaeological applications. She holds a PhD in Philosophy (Prehistory and Historical Archaeology) from the University of Vienna (2015-2020), a Master's in Archaeology from "La Sapienza" University of Rome (2011-2014), and a Bachelor's in Archaeological Sciences from the same institution (2007-2011).
Her research focuses on microarchaeology and the application of natural sciences in archaeology, with particular expertise in clay building architecture, construction techniques, and space usage analysis. She investigates material properties and their impact on human behavior, perception, and experience, integrating geoarchaeological methods with sociological approaches. Her work on formation processes has significant applications in archaeological field research, especially at sites like Arslantepe, Monjukli Depe, and Abu Tbeirah.
Dr. Cereda's publication record demonstrates a consistent focus on microarchaeological methods applied to Anatolian and Mesopotamian sites, particularly Arslantepe in Turkey. Her research shows evolving sophistication in analytical techniques, moving from basic micro-residue analysis to integrated multi-analytical approaches that combine micromorphology, petrography, and other scientific methods. Recent work expands into Alpine archaeology with studies of the Kropfsberg mine and Traunkirchen lakeshore settlement.
Dr. Cereda has received several research scholarships including the "Uni:docs fellowship program" from the University of Vienna (2015-2018) and a nine-month research scholarship at Koç University's Research Center for Anatolian Civilizations (2018-2019). She has participated in numerous international workshops focused on archaeological soil micromorphology.
While specific information about students she has advised isn't provided, her active research program and teaching engagements suggest involvement in mentoring graduate students. Her research has been supported by collaborative projects with institutions including Freie Universität Berlin, University of Cambridge, and "La Sapienza" University of Rome.
Dr. Cereda is actively involved in the Microarchaeology Laboratory at the University of Innsbruck, where she conducts analyses of sediment samples from various Austrian excavations including Haselbach, Kundl, and Mauk E. Her work connects with international research teams studying sites in Turkey, Turkmenistan, and Iraq, forming a global network focused on advancing microarchaeological methods.
