Susanna Alexius is Associate Professor in Business Administration and Research Director at Score (Stockholm Center for Organizational Research) at Stockholm University and Stockholm School of Economics. She is affiliated with the Department of Social Anthropology at Stockholm University and specializes in organizational studies with a focus on how organizations respond to external expectations, uncertainty, and complex missions. Her work bridges academic research and practical application in public sector management and civil society.
Alexius's research centers on hybrid organizing across societal sectors, management of value conflicts, and tackling grand societal challenges. She investigates how different organizational forms respond to institutional complexity, with particular interest in constitutional hybrids that integrate public, market, and civil society logics. Her work examines inter-organizational relations in development aid, climate collaboration initiatives, and the social meaning of money in nonprofit contexts. She approaches these topics through historical case studies and contemporary organizational analysis.
Alexius's publication record reveals a consistent focus on organizational complexity, trust dynamics, and hybrid forms. Her recent work examines the 90-year history of the Swedish Federation for Sexual Education (RFSU) as a successful constitutional hybrid, climate collaboration challenges, and trust mechanisms in aid relations. She demonstrates how organizations navigate institutional pluralism while maintaining mission integrity, with particular attention to how hybrid organizations can enable sustainable transformation and tackle grand societal challenges through multivocal approaches.
Alexius is deeply committed to translating research into practice. She teaches at both Stockholm University and Stockholm School of Economics while directing executive education programs for public sector leaders. Her engagement extends to editing the Swedish journal "Organisation & Samhälle" and serving as a sought-after speaker who bridges academic research and practical application in organizational development.
Her collaborative work spans multiple institutions and disciplines. She currently leads projects funded by the Swedish Research Council with colleagues Janet Vähämäki and Staffan Furusten, examining uncertainty in development aid and climate collaboration respectively. As Research Director of Score, she coordinates interdisciplinary research on organizational forms capable of addressing society's most complex challenges.
