Dr. Susana Steppan is an Emeritus Associate Teaching Professor in Chemical Engineering at Carnegie Mellon University. Her expertise lies in materials characterization, particularly for industrial coatings, polyurethanes, and acrylic systems, with applications spanning automotive finishes to art conservation.
Education:
- Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering, University of Massachusetts (1990)
- B.S. in Chemical Engineering, University of Southern California (1986)
Before joining academia, she held senior research positions at PPG Industries and Bayer Corporation, managing material science laboratories and leading automotive coatings R&D teams. Her doctoral research focused on rheological behavior of polymer solutions, and she later contributed to fundamental studies of acrylic paint aging at the Research Center on Materials of the Artist and Conservator. At CMU, she enhanced laboratory curricula and managed the CPS program facilities.
