Sevim Karataş

Prof. Sevim Karataş is a faculty member in the Department of Chemistry at the Faculty of Arts and Sciences, Marmara University, where she has been serving as a Professor since 2016. She previously held the positions of Associate Professor (2011–2016) and Research Assistant (1995–2011). Her research is centered on polymer chemistry, particularly UV-curable coatings, hybrid and nanocomposite materials, and sol-gel processes.

Her work often integrates phosphorus, fluorine, and silica-based components to enhance flame retardancy, hydrophobicity, and mechanical performance.

Her recent publications (2022–2024) reveal a strong trend toward the development of ureidopyrimidinone-functionalized and POSS-vinyl-based nanohybrids, fluorosiloxane hybrids, and epoxy acrylate-clay nanocomposites, all aimed at improving coating performance under UV curing. These studies emphasize polymer synthesis, material characterization, and structure-property relationships.

Prof. Karataş has supervised multiple graduate students and led several research projects funded by higher education institutions. Her leadership in research is evident through her role as executive in projects such as Development of UV-curable waterborne polymeric materials and Biyo-eseslı Polimer Nanokompozit Malzemelerin Sentezi ve Kaplama Uygulamaları. She collaborates extensively with researchers like N. Kayaman Apohan, M. V. Kahraman, and Y. Menceloğlu.

She is actively involved in laboratory-based research, focusing on polymer synthesis, sol-gel processing, and coating formulation. Her team works on developing sustainable, high-performance materials for applications in protective coatings, electronics, and industrial surfaces.
