Susana Caxaj, PhD, is an Associate Professor and Associate Director of Graduate Programs at the Arthur Labatt Family School of Nursing, Western University. Her research focuses on underserved populations' access to healthcare, particularly racialized, migrant, and Indigenous communities. She holds a PhD from Western University and a BScN from Queen's University.
Dr. Caxaj’s work examines structural barriers faced by migrant agricultural workers, including housing inequities, legal protections, and systemic racism. She has conducted studies on migrant worker mortality during the pandemic and global comparisons of health policies. Her research integrates anti-racist frameworks and advocates for policy reforms in nursing education and healthcare systems.
Her recent publications highlight migrant workers' health vulnerabilities in Canada and internationally, emphasizing the intersections of labor rights, housing, and social justice. She has also explored gender binaries in nursing theory and community-based interventions for marginalized groups. Dr. Caxaj collaborates on projects addressing health equity through deliberative dialogue and participatory research methods.
As Associate Director of Graduate Programs, she oversees academic advising and student support systems. Her contributions to nursing education include mentorship frameworks and curriculum redesign to address anti-Black racism and structural inequities.
