Susan Weng Larsen serves as an Associate Professor in the Department of Pharmacy within the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences at the University of Copenhagen. Her academic career at the institution spans over two decades, beginning as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutics and Analytical Chemistry in 2003, and advancing to her current position in 2008.
Education:
- PhD in Pharmaceutics from The Danish University of Pharmaceutical Sciences (2003)
- MSc Pharm degree
Dr. Larsen's research focuses on advanced drug delivery systems with particular expertise in intra-articular oil injectables for prolonged analgesia, novel prodrug principles for localized NSAID action, and in situ suspension-forming injectables for sustained drug delivery. Her work encompasses the development of in vitro release methods to characterize depot formulations for subcutaneous and intra-articular administration, as well as investigations into liquid crystalline nanostructures as sustained release platforms. Additional research interests include osteoarthritis therapy through articular cartilage targeting and lymphatic biodistribution of nanocarriers based on cubosomes and hexosomes.
Her recent publications (2022-2024) demonstrate continued innovation in pharmaceutical analysis and drug delivery, with particular emphasis on advanced imaging techniques like UV-Vis for characterizing injectable formulations, development of bio-relevant testing methods, and investigations into novel drug carriers including graphene oxide composites. Her work spans multiple therapeutic areas including diabetes (insulin delivery), ophthalmology (glaucoma treatments), oncology (intra-tumoral delivery), and antifungal therapy.
As an educator, Dr. Larsen teaches Pharmaceutical Physical Chemistry and Pharmaceutical Preformulation courses, and supervises bachelor, master, and PhD students in the Pharmacy program. Her research has resulted in 74 documented research outputs including journal articles, patents, book chapters, and conference presentations, reflecting substantial contributions to pharmaceutical sciences.
Dr. Larsen maintains active research collaborations across multiple departments at the University of Copenhagen, including her guest researcher position in the Department of Drug Design and Pharmacology, and has established herself as a significant contributor to the development of advanced drug delivery methodologies and analytical techniques in pharmaceutical research.
