Susan Vanderborg is an Associate Professor in the Department of English Language and Literature at the University of South Carolina’s McCausland College of Arts and Sciences. She holds a PhD from Stanford University (1996). Her research focuses on contemporary experimental poetry, artists’ books, interactive fiction, and intersections between science fiction and bio-poetry. She has taught courses such as 'Impossible Cities: Architectures of Postmodernism' and 'American Cyborgs,' blending literary analysis with digital media studies.
Her recent research includes studies on Porpentine’s interactive poetry and Emily Short’s First Draft of the Revolution, exploring how digital formats reshape literary politics. Her publications span journals like INKS, Postmodern Culture, and Science Fiction Studies, with a focus on textual instability, posthumanism, and material book culture. Notable works analyze graphic documents in political satire, viral communications in science poetry, and invented languages like Láadan.
Vanderborg has presented at major conferences including the Modern Language Association (MLA) and the National Poetry Foundation, addressing topics like ecopoetry’s nonhuman elements and the ethical dimensions of postmodern narratives. Her work bridges traditional literary scholarship with digital innovation, emphasizing how technology redefines authorship and reader engagement.
