Susan Thomas is an Associate Professor in the Department of English and Writing at the University of Sydney, where she serves as the Founding Director of the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences Writing Hub and WRIT Program. Her leadership roles include former Associate Dean Teaching and Learning (FASS), Director of Academic Writing, and Teaching Development Coordinator across multiple faculties. She is also the past President of the American Council of Writing Program Administrators and a member of the Charles Perkins Centre.
Research Interests: Susan specializes in theories of writing grounded in cognitive rhetoric, with a focus on affect and cognition, AI-assisted writing, feminist and global rhetorics, and writing pedagogy. Her work challenges deficit remediation models in higher education and advocates for inclusive writing instruction.
Recent Publications explore topics such as AI in writing education, gender bias in classrooms, and the social role of writing instruction in diverse academic settings.
