Susan Stern is an Associate Professor at the Factor-Inwentash Faculty of Social Work, University of Toronto, with a cross-appointment at the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing. She holds a Ph.D. from the School of Social Service Administration, University of Chicago, and has been a faculty member since 2002, previously teaching at Boston University and the State University of New York at Albany.
Her research focuses on:
- Parent engagement in children's mental health
- Evidence-based parenting and family therapy models
- Child and adolescent mental health and trauma
- Family intervention and delinquency prevention
- Implementation science in community settings
- Culturally and contextually responsive clinical research
Susan has led major research initiatives funded by SSHRC, the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, and collaborative partnerships with Kinark Child and Family Services and the McSilver Institute at NYU. Her work emphasizes treatment fidelity, peer supervision, and cultural adaptation of parenting programs such as Incredible Years and Triple P.
She is the Coordinator of the Children and Their Families Field of Practice and teaches courses in family practice and child/adolescent trauma. Her scholarship integrates extensive frontline practice experience from urban child welfare and mental health settings.
Susan has held prestigious appointments including Research Scientist at the Child Development Institute and Inaugural Visiting Scholar at the McSilver Institute for Poverty Policy and Research. Her interdisciplinary collaborations span social work, nursing, and public health domains.
She is actively engaged in community-partnered research and knowledge translation, contributing to policy and practice improvements in family services and youth development.
