Susan Shaheen

Susan Shaheen is a Professor in the Civil and Environmental Engineering department at the University of California, Berkeley. She serves as Co-Director of the Transportation Sustainability Research Center of the Institute of Transportation Studies (ITS)-Berkeley and Director of the UC ITS' Resilient and Innovative Mobility Initiative. Professor Shaheen earned her Ph.D. from UC Davis and her M.S. from the University of Rochester. She has established herself as a pioneering researcher in transportation studies with significant contributions to multiple subfields.

Professor Shaheen was among the first academics to research shared mobility dynamics and potential pathways for automated vehicle adoption. Her scholarly work spans electrification/alternative fuels, advanced air mobility, behavioral dynamics, and public policy with a focus on social equity in sustainable transportation systems. Her research bridges technical innovation with societal impacts, addressing how transportation technologies can be implemented to maximize benefits while minimizing negative consequences.

Her substantial scholarly output includes 85 journal articles, over 160 reports and proceedings articles, 35 book chapters, and three co-edited books, reflecting her prolific contributions to transportation research literature.

Professor Shaheen's professional recognition includes:

• The 2017 Roy W. Crum award from the Transportation Research Board for distinguished achievements in transportation research
• Being named one of the top 10 academic thought leaders in transportation by the Eno Transportation Foundation in May 2016

She has held significant leadership positions in the transportation research community, serving as Chair of the TRB Executive Committee (2021-2022), Vice Chair (2020-2021), and Chair of the Subcommittee for Planning and Policy Review for the TRB Executive Committee starting in January 2022.
