Susan Pitchford is a Senior Lecturer and Associate Teaching Professor Emerita in the Department of Sociology at the University of Washington. She holds a Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Washington (1994), an MA and BA in Sociology from the same institution, and an ASN in Nursing from Oakwood College. Her research focuses on how marginalized groups use museums and tourist attractions to reclaim and project national identities, as explored in her book Identity Tourism: Imaging and Imagining the Nation. She also writes on spirituality and Christian contemplation, including God in the Dark and The Sacred Gaze.
Pitchford teaches courses such as Introduction to Sociology, American Race and Ethnic Relations, and Comparative Social Problems. She leads study abroad programs in Rome (focusing on early Christian history), Zimbabwe/South Africa (sustainable development), and Belfast (conflict resolution). Her work bridges sociology with religious studies, emphasizing interdisciplinary connections between cultural identity and spiritual practices.
Her non-academic contributions include regular writings for Give Us This Day, a Catholic periodical. Current projects explore the intersections of social psychology and contemplative traditions.
