Susan N. Mayberry holds the Jane Petersen Professor of Humanities position at Alfred University's Department of English within the College of Liberal Arts & Sciences. She specializes in Early Modern British Literature, Shakespeare, African American Literature (especially Toni Morrison), and the study of poetry and drama. Her research bridges gender studies, postcolonial theory, and cultural criticism.
Mayberry earned her BA in English from Meredith College, MA from North Carolina State University, and PhD from the University of Tennessee. Notable roles include Margaret & Barbara Hagar Professor in the Humanities (2016–2022) and Fred H. Gertz Professor of English (2001–2004). She has received prestigious awards such as the Kruson Award for Excellence in Teaching (multiple years), Toni Morrison Society Book Recognition Award, and Outstanding Book Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender.
Her scholarship focuses on Toni Morrison’s exploration of gender, race, and identity. Key works include The Critical Life of Toni Morrison (2021) and Can’t I Love What I Criticize? (2007), which examines masculinity in Morrison’s narratives. Recent research analyzes Morrison’s Home and A Mercy, probing themes like othermothering, colonialism, and cultural symbolism.
Mayberry’s career reflects dedication to teaching and interdisciplinary critique. She has served as AU Faculty Scholar (2021) and holds the current Jane Petersen Professorship (2022–). Her work consistently challenges canonical narratives, emphasizing marginalized voices in literature.
