
Angelyn Mitchell

Angelyn Mitchell is an Associate Professor at Georgetown University's College of Arts & Sciences, jointly appointed in the Departments of English and African American Studies. She founded the African American Studies Program in 2003 and served as its first director until 2013.
Her research focuses on African American literary and cultural studies, with particular emphasis on Black women writers, Black feminist theories, race and representation, gender and racial politics, and the cultural legacy of slavery in the American South. She has lectured globally on Toni Morrison's work and co-founded the Toni Morrison Society.
Key publications include:
- Within the Circle (1994) – a foundational anthology of African American literary criticism
- The Freedom to Remember (2002) – analyzing gender and memory in slavery narratives
- Cambridge Companion to African American Women's Writing (2009) – chronicling Black women's literary traditions
Scientific awards include:
- GU Black Student Alliance Outstanding Faculty Award (4x)
- Georgetown Dean’s Award for Excellence in Teaching (2015)
- Diverse: Issues in Higher Education Outstanding Women Leader (2017)
- GU African American Alumni Advisory Board Distinguished Leader Award (2020)
Mitchell directed Georgetown's Mentoring Future Professors of Color Program for 20 years and serves on the Toni Morrison Society's Board of Directors.
