Research interests emphasize intersections between censorship, sexuality, and ethics in modern/contemporary narratives. Her landmark book The Artistic Censoring of Sexuality (2008) analyzes how authors across multiple nations subvert political censorship through explorations of sexuality. Recent work extends to feminist theatre, Beckett studies, and queer maternal narratives. Articles often bridge literary analysis with psychoanalytic and semiotic frameworks.
Her 21+ publications demonstrate thematic consistency across decades—exploring masculinity ethics, postcolonial censorship, and affective politics in global texts. Notable awards include the USF Teaching Award (2006) and Spain's 2024 Cultural Cooperation grant.
Mooney has led numerous research projects including a 20-year humanities grant at USF and held leadership roles in academic committees. She teaches 13 courses emphasizing modernist literature, feminist theory, and narrative ethics.
