Susan Montgomery is a Professor of Mathematics and Director of Graduate Studies at the University of Southern California (USC), holding the prestigious Gabilan Distinguished Professorship in Science and Engineering. Her research focuses on non-commutative algebras, Hopf algebras, quantum groups, and their applications. She has held leadership roles including Vice-President of the American Mathematical Society (AMS), trustee of the AMS, and chair of the USC Mathematics Department.
Education: B.A. (summa cum laude) from the University of Michigan (1965), M.S. (1966), and Ph.D. (1969) from the University of Chicago. Career milestones include serving as an Assistant Professor (1970–1975), Associate Professor (1975–1982), and Professor (1982–present) at USC.
Research interests emphasize structural properties of Hopf algebras, actions on rings, and quantum group theory. Awards include the Guggenheim Fellowship, Noether Lecturer honor, and Fellowships from the AMS and AAAS. She has supervised numerous PhD students and secured significant grants from NSF and other agencies.
Key contributions include organizing international conferences, editorial leadership in journals like Journal of Algebra and Algebras and Representation Theory, and fostering collaborative research networks. Her work bridges algebraic theory with applications in representation theory and mathematical physics.
