Susan Maxwell is a Professor of Art History at the University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, specializing in Renaissance and Baroque art, graphic arts history, and the intersection of art with early modern diplomacy and warfare. She holds an MA and PhD from the University of Virginia. Her research focuses on art collecting during the Thirty Years' War, ducal diplomacy through prints and drawings around 1600, and the role of art in political and cultural negotiations.
Recent work includes examining Hendrick Goltzius' influence on Munich's Grottenhof and analyzing Maximilian I of Bavaria's art patronage during wartime. She has published in journals like Renaissance Quarterly and Sixteenth Century Journal, and presented at international conferences such as the Frühe Neuzeit Interdisziplinär and the Sixteenth Century Studies Conference.
Maxwell has received grants including a DAAD Research Fellowship at the Zentralinstitut für Kunstgeschichte in Munich and multiple University of Wisconsin Faculty Development Grants. Her public lectures address topics like early modern art collections and the impact of war on cultural heritage.
