Susan Mandel

Susan Mandel, MD, MPH, is the Sylvan H. Eisman Professor of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism at the Perelman School of Medicine, University of Pennsylvania. She is also an Associate Scholar at the Center for Global Health, collaborating with the University of Witwatersrand in South Africa on thyroid cancer initiatives.

Her research and clinical expertise center on thyroid neoplasia, thyroid cancer, and ultrasound evaluation of thyroid nodules. She has been instrumental in developing national and international clinical guidelines through the American Thyroid Association (ATA) and Endocrine Society, particularly in thyroid nodule management and thyroid disorders during pregnancy. Her work emphasizes evidence-based, patient-centered care and educational innovation in endocrinology.

Dr. Mandel has led ultrasound training workshops and contributed to major medical textbooks, including Harrison’s Principles of Internal Medicine and Werner and Ingbar’s The Thyroid. Her recent publications reflect a strong focus on diagnostic imaging, global health implementation, and clinical education.

Dr. Mandel has mentored over 70 endocrinology fellows during her 21-year tenure as Fellowship Program Director, with 8 of her trainees becoming program directors themselves. She has received research support through institutional and professional grants, enabling her work in clinical innovation and global capacity building. She currently serves as Secretary of the International Society of Endocrinology and previously served as President of the Endocrine Society (2018–2019) and the Association of Program Directors in Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Metabolism (2009–2011).

She leads a multidisciplinary team focused on thyroid disease, including collaborations with radiologists, surgeons, and pathologists. Her global health lab in South Africa established a US-guided thyroid biopsy clinic and multidisciplinary tumor boards to improve thyroid cancer care in resource-limited settings.
