Susan M. Williams is a Professor in the Department of Population Health at the University of Georgia's College of Veterinary Medicine, serving as Graduate Faculty since 2005 and Adjunct Professor in Pathology since 2006. She provides diagnostic pathology services for Georgia's poultry industry through the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center and teaches advanced courses in avian histopathology and toxicology.
Education:
- BS in Zoology, University of California-Davis (1989)
- DVM, Tuskegee University (1994)
- PhD in Veterinary Pathology, Michigan State University (2001)
- Board Certified by the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (2004)
Research Focus: Dr. Williams specializes in avian tumor viruses, avian histopathology, and immunohistochemical techniques, with significant contributions to understanding viral pathogenesis in poultry. Her work bridges laboratory research with practical diagnostics, addressing critical challenges in commercial poultry production and wildlife conservation through interdisciplinary approaches.
Publication Trends: Her recent research (2015-2019) reveals a strong emphasis on viral disease mechanisms (infectious bronchitis, laryngotracheitis, Marek's disease), nutritional interventions for gut health (sodium butyrate, prebiotics), and environmental toxicology (lead exposure impacts). This body of work demonstrates consistent translational focus from molecular diagnostics to field applications in poultry health management.
Scientific Recognition:
- Board Certification by the American College of Poultry Veterinarians (2004)
- National Geographic feature (May 2016) for Avian Vacuolar Myelinopathy research
Academic Leadership: As Graduate Faculty, Dr. Williams mentors graduate students in veterinary pathology while moderating core courses like VPAT 8220 Avian Histopathology. Her diagnostic activities directly support Georgia's $26 billion poultry industry through the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center.
Research Infrastructure: She operates within the Poultry Diagnostic and Research Center ecosystem, collaborating with industry partners and state agencies to develop diagnostic protocols and disease mitigation strategies for emerging poultry pathogens.
