Professor Susan Lanham-New is the Head of the Department of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Surrey, within the School of Biosciences under the Faculty of Health and Medical Sciences. She holds a PhD in Nutrition and Metabolic Bone Disease from the University of Aberdeen (1996), an MSc in Human Nutrition and Metabolism (1989), and a BA in Sports Studies (1987). Her research focuses on vitamin D deficiency, bone health, and dietary interventions, with notable projects including the D-FINES study on sunlight exposure and vitamin D status in diverse populations.
She supervises 4 current PhD students and 3 post-doctoral researchers, including projects funded by the Saudi Government and UK Ministry of Defence. Her teaching includes courses in Food Science and Nutrition, Nutrition BSc, and Nutrition and Dietetics. She collaborates with industry and government to address public health challenges related to vitamin D.
Recent publications (2024) explore the impact of residential greenness on vitamin D levels and dietary associations with health outcomes in the UK Biobank. She has supervised over a dozen postgraduate researchers, including Majid Ghayour-Morbarhan and Sawsan Khoja. Her work aligns with sustainable development goals addressing health equity and environmental influences on nutrition.
