Susan K McCarthy is a Professor of Political Science and Director of the Asian & Asian American Studies Program at Providence College. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Political Science from the University of California - Berkeley (Ph.D. 2001, M.A. 1993). Her research focuses on religion and politics in China, particularly examining faith-based organizations, Buddhist charity practices, and state-religion interactions. She has led three major grants exploring topics such as religious innovation in China and faith-based charity systems funded by the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation and the Committee on Aid to Faculty Research (2007-2015).
Her scholarly contributions include groundbreaking works analyzing cultural governance in contemporary China, the role of religious rituals in political contexts, and the intersection of Buddhist philanthropy with state policies. She has served in multiple professional service roles including Chair and Committee Member positions from 2007-2012.
Her publications blend ethnographic research with theoretical frameworks, offering critical insights into China's evolving religious landscape and governance strategies. Current research trends indicate continued focus on religious actors as key participants in shaping socio-political dynamics in China.
