Susan Hyde is the Robson Professor of Political Science at the University of California, Berkeley, and currently serves as Chair of the Department of Political Science (2021–2024) and co-director of the Institute of International Studies. Her research focuses on international influences on domestic politics, threats to democracy, and election observation. She has served as an international election observer in multiple countries and holds editorial roles at leading journals, including the American Journal of Political Science and International Organization.
Hyde earned her Ph.D. from UC San Diego (2006) and previously held positions at Yale University and fellowships at the Brookings Institution and Princeton University. She has been recognized with prestigious awards, including the Karl Deutsch Award (2018) for contributions to International Relations. Her work emphasizes policy-relevant research, particularly on democracy promotion and electoral integrity.
Her key contributions include the book The Pseudo-Democrat's Dilemma (2011), the National Elections Across Democracy and Autocracy (NELDA) dataset, and leadership in the EGAP network’s Metaketa experimental initiatives. She is affiliated with multiple research centers, including the Institute for Global Conflict and Cooperation and the Center on the Politics of Development.
