Susan Gilfillan, PhD is an Associate Professor in the Department of Pathology & Immunology at Washington University School of Medicine (WashU). Her work focuses on genetic engineering of mouse models, including CRISPR-based techniques, and collaborations with the Pathology Transgenic, Knockout and Microinjection core (GEiC). She specializes in designing genotyping protocols and breeding programs that control for microbiota and environmental factors to generate experimental mouse cohorts for research and distribution to academic and industry partners.
Education:
- BA in Biology/English from University of Denver (1982)
- PhD from Stanford University School of Medicine (1990)
- Postdoctoral Fellow at Institut de Chimie Biologique, Strasbourg/I.G.B.M.C., France (1990–1995)
- Member of Basel Institute for Immunology, Switzerland (1996–2001)
Susan has dedicated her career to developing genetically engineered mice, transitioning from embryonic stem cell gene targeting to CRISPR technology. Her current work emphasizes microbiota-controlled breeding programs and contributions to grant proposals involving knockout/reporter mouse models and disease studies. She also collaborates with external institutions and companies for mouse distribution.
