Susan Felleman is a Professor of Art History and Film and Media Studies at the School of Visual Art and Design, part of the McCausland College of Arts and Sciences at the University of South Carolina. Her research explores intersections between film and visual arts, with a focus on avant-garde cinema, Hollywood narratives, modern art, psychoanalytic theory, and feminist critique.

Her work examines how film engages with visual art forms, including sculpture, painting, and photography, emphasizing intermediality and cultural critique. Recent projects include analyses of Agnès Varda’s films, feminist reimaginings of cinematic gender representation, and interdisciplinary collaborations such as video essays and co-directed films. Felleman has authored four books, including Botticelli in Hollywood (1997) and Screening Statues (2017), and has contributed to journals like Acta Universitatis Sapientiae and Interfaces.
Her articles reflect a deep engagement with historical and theoretical frameworks, addressing topics like surrealism’s influence on cinema, the role of sculpture in film narratives, and the intersections of psychoanalysis and feminist theory in visual media.
As a scholar and filmmaker, Felleman co-directed the feature-length documentary In Production: The Life and Career of George Justin, challenging conventional academic formats through videographic storytelling.
