Susan Downie is an Assistant Professor of Greek and Roman Studies. She holds a BA in Classical Studies and History from the University of Waterloo, followed by an MA and PhD in Classical Studies from the University of Toronto. Her research focuses on Greek history, political and social dynamics, classical mythology, religion, ancient art, and architecture. Her doctoral thesis (2004) explored hero cults as political propaganda at Delphi and Olympia, and her current work examines the interplay of politics and religion in Archaic and Classical Greece.
Downie has conducted archaeological fieldwork at Kommos, Crete, and led study tours in Greece, lecturing on architecture, sanctuaries, and religious practices from the Bronze Age to the late Classical period. She specializes in epic poetry and the material culture of ancient Greece.
