Susan Crutchfield is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. Her work focuses on Film Studies, Disability Studies, African American Literature, and Feminist Film Theory. She teaches courses like 'Representations of Disability in Literature, Drama, and Film' and 'Contemporary African American Literature and Film.'
Crutchfield holds an A.B. in English from Bryn Mawr College, and both an M.A. and Ph.D. in English Language and Literature from the University of Michigan - Ann Arbor. Her research explores intersections of disability, race, and gender across literary and cinematic mediums.
Her recent work includes analyzing Helen Keller’s vaudeville performances (presented on Radiolab) and examining race dynamics in films like Get Out. She has presented at conferences such as the Association for Multiethnic Literature of the U.S. and New England Modern Language Association.
Crutchfield actively participates in community initiatives like the UWL Jail Literacy Program, which received a state award. Her pedagogical focus includes innovative approaches to teaching controversial texts and adapting classic works for modern audiences.
