Susan Bressman, MD is Professor of Neurology at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, where she serves as Director of the Mount Sinai Health System Movement Disorders Center and holds the Mirken Family Professorship in Neurology. With over 30 years of experience, she has established herself as a leading expert in movement disorders research and clinical care.
- Professor of Neurology, Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
- Director, Mount Sinai Health System Movement Disorders Center
- Mirken Family Professor of Neurology
Dr. Bressman's research focuses on identifying genetic etiologies and disease mechanisms underlying dystonia and Parkinson's disease. She has contributed significantly to discovering genes associated with these conditions including TOR1A, THAP1, GNAL, GCH1, SGCE for dystonia and LRRK2, GBA for Parkinson's disease. Her work emphasizes clinical characterization and family studies to identify homogeneous patient subgroups, followed by translational research using clinical testing, imaging, and biomarkers to understand disease mechanisms.
Her recent publications demonstrate continued focus on alpha-synuclein pathology, LRRK2-associated parkinsonism, and integrated staging systems for Parkinson's disease. These works appear in high-impact journals including Brain Communications, Movement Disorders, and npj Parkinson's Disease, reflecting her leadership in advancing the field's understanding of disease progression and biomarker development.
- 2017 Honorary Membership Award, International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society
- 2016 Movement Disorder Research Award, American Academy of Neurology
- 2016 Bachman Strauss Prize, Michael J. Fox Foundation
- 2008 Stanley Fahn Lectureship, The Movement Disorder Society
Dr. Bressman's research program has been consistently supported by major funding sources including the NIH, Michael J Fox Foundation, Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, and Bachmann Strauss Dystonia and Parkinson's Foundation. Her leadership in creating and promoting translational research teams has facilitated significant advances in understanding the genetic basis of movement disorders.
As Director of the Mount Sinai Health System Movement Disorders Center, Dr. Bressman oversees a comprehensive clinical and research program dedicated to advancing care for patients with Parkinson's disease, dystonia, and related movement disorders through innovative research and clinical excellence.
