Susan Branje is a Professor of Development and Socialization in Adolescence at Utrecht University's Faculty of Social Sciences, affiliated with the Youth and Family Research Group. She serves as Head of the Department of Youth and Family within the Educational Sciences program. Her roles include academic leadership, research, and teaching in areas such as adolescent development, parent-child relationships, and psychosocial adjustment.
Education and Career: Branje earned her PhD in Developmental Psychology from Radboud University (cum laude, 2003) and her Master's from the same institution (cum laude, 1997). She has held academic positions at Utrecht University since 2002, progressing from Assistant Professor (2002–2006) to Associate Professor (2006–2012) before becoming a Full Professor in 2012. She has led the Youth and Family department since 2013.
Research Focus: Branje's work examines how adolescents' relationships with family, peers, and partners influence their identity development, personality growth, and psychosocial well-being. Key themes include transitions to adulthood, intergenerational transmission, and the impact of divorce on children. Her research projects include 'Where do I belong?' (examining multi-resident family dynamics) and studies on the psychological effects of the COVID-19 pandemic.
