Susan Bloom

Susan Bloom is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Cinematic Arts at California State University, Long Beach, where she serves as co-head of the Post Production track and head of Editing. She has taught at CSULB since August 2019, following prior appointments at Humboldt State University and Brooks Institute of Photography.

Her educational background includes:

• MFA in Radio-TV-Film Production, University of Texas, Austin (Minor: German)
• BA in Classics, Hampshire College, Amherst, Massachusetts

Additionally, Bloom holds certifications as an Avid Certified Instructor (Media Composer Professional Editing) and Avid Certified User (Pro Tools).

Bloom's research centers on leveraging cinematic media for environmental advocacy and public outreach. Her work bridges documentary filmmaking with ecological communication, exemplified by her feature documentary "Goodbye to All Cats" about New Zealand's native species conservation efforts. Current projects include editing a feature narrative and co-directing a documentary on composer Jennifer Higdon, emphasizing narrative techniques for scientific storytelling.

As an educator, she pioneered Avid Learning Partnerships across three institutions, enabling student certification in industry-standard editing tools. Her Adobe Education Leadership role facilitates cross-disciplinary CSU collaborations. In her administrative capacity, Bloom shapes curriculum for the Editing and Post Production tracks, integrating professional certifications into academic training while maintaining active industry engagement through theatrical documentary editing and network television post-production work.
