Susan Birkwood is an Associate Professor in the Department of English at Carleton University’s Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences. Holding a Ph.D. and M.A. from the University of Western Ontario, her work bridges Indigenous and Canadian literatures with 19th-century British literature, historical fiction, and travel narratives.
Her research interrogates colonial legacies, focusing on how Enlightenment-era theories of social development shaped European and settler representations of Indigenous peoples. She explores intersections of genre, gender, and policy in historical and contemporary texts.
Recent publications analyze Katherena Vermette’s reclamation of Winnipeg’s North End, material cultures in Canadian novels, and revisionist Arctic narratives. Her scholarship also engages with gender and colonial discourse through Anna Jameson’s writings.
