Susan Belau is a Professor in the Department of Art at San Francisco State University's School of Art. She specializes in printmaking, drawing, and graduate seminars. Her work explores memory, time, and spatial boundaries through traditional and digital media. She holds a B.A. in Studio Art from UC Santa Cruz and an M.F.A. in Printmaking from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, with additional training at Paulson-Bott Press in Berkeley.
Her research focuses on the interplay between observed drawing and printmaking's repetitive mutability, often addressing themes of enclosure, urban environments, and natural landscapes. Notable series include Duos, Terrains, and Paper Geography, which critically examine boundaries and space through etching, chine-collé, and folded paper techniques.
- Key Projects:
- Clippings (2017) – Awarded the CSP Residency at Gruenwald Press.
- Strata (2013-14) – Explores geological layering through folded paper etchings.
- Enclosure series (2021) – Examines spatial containment and visual transformation.
Belau's awards include the CSP Residency Award (2017). Her work balances technical mastery with conceptual depth, often bridging the gap between the built environment and natural phenomena. She advises graduate students and contributes to exhibitions nationally.
