Susan Barker is a Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at Manchester Metropolitan University, specializing in literary fiction and cultural narratives. She holds an MA in Novel Writing from the University of Manchester (2004) and a BA in Philosophy and Politics from the University of Leeds (2000). Her research explores themes of cultural identity, history, and the supernatural through immersive storytelling.
Barker’s major works include Old Soul (2025), a genre-defying horror novel; The Incarnations (2014), a critically acclaimed exploration of time and mortality; and Sayonara Bar (2005), set in Osaka. Her writing has earned accolades such as the Kirkus Prize shortlist and Jerwood Fiction Uncovered Prize.
She teaches MA/MFA Creative Writing programs, emphasizing close reading and narrative craft. Her academic career is enriched by residencies in Kyoto and Beijing, where she conducted research for her novels. Barker’s work often bridges literary fiction with speculative elements, addressing themes of loneliness, predation, and cultural dislocation.
