Dr. Surabhi Shukla serves as Lecturer and Deputy Director of Employability and Enrichment Activities (Legal Tech) at the University of Sheffield's School of Law. Previously, she held academic positions at Manchester Metropolitan University (2021-2022) and SOAS (2021-2023), and worked at Jindal Global Law School as Assistant Professor and Assistant Director of the Centre for Justice, Law and Society, alongside experience at the Indian Supreme Court and Jagori (a prominent women's rights NGO).
Her academic credentials include:
- DPhil in Law (2022) - University of Oxford
- LL.M. (2012) - University of California, Los Angeles
- B.A.LL.B. (Hons) (2011) - National Law School of India University
Shukla's research centers on sexual orientation and gender identity laws in India and constitutional law at the intersection of religion, culture, and fundamental rights. She investigates the social afterlife of legal judgments through artistic mediums, exemplified by her blog lawandsexuality.com (cited in India's Supreme Court judicial training manual) and the award-winning genderdiversityinschools.com project addressing gender non-conforming students. Her work actively bridges academic research and community impact through collaborations with ACLU, Williams Institute, and queer communities.
Her publication portfolio demonstrates consistent focus on SOGI rights, constitutional challenges, and lived experiences of marginalized communities. Key thematic trends include judicial interpretation of dignity in LGBTQIA+ cases, bureaucratic barriers to gender recognition, and cultural claims in fundamental rights litigation - particularly regarding same-sex marriage, surrogacy, and sex-work.
Major recognitions include:
- British Academy Postdoctoral Fellowship shortlist (2021)
- IASSCS Emerging Scholars Fellowship (2014)
- Donald Snow Award for LGBT civil rights (2012)
- Jack Collins Social Action Bursary
Currently co-supervising PhD candidate Hussain Bari (Rule of Law in Bangladesh), she has secured competitive grants including the UNSW Comparative Constitutional Law Workshop (2022) and Melbourne Laureate Visiting Fellowship (2018). She founded Sheffield's Lectures on Gender and Sexuality series (2023) to bridge academic research and public discourse, while maintaining active community engagement through police training, UGC faculty development programs, and international speaking engagements.
