Professor Sunil Manghani is a Professor of Theory, Practice & Critique and Deputy Head of School at the Winchester School of Art, University of Southampton. He holds roles as Editor of Journal of Visual Art Practice and Managing Editor of Theory, Culture & Society. He is a fellow at the Alan Turing Institute’s AI and Arts group and member of the Web Science Institute’s Academic Advisory Board. Manghani’s research focuses on visual art, critical theory, and AI integration in arts. He has curated exhibitions including Barthes/Burgin and authored influential books like Image Studies (2013) and Rhythm and Critique (2020). His current projects explore structuralism, AI applications, and visual practice. He supervises PhD students in areas spanning aesthetics, cultural studies, and global art politics.
Education: BA Anthropology/Communication Studies (Goldsmiths, University of London), MA/PhD Critical Theory (University of Nottingham).
Research Interests: Visual Art & Culture, Image Studies, Critical Theory, AI and Arts, Structuralism. His work bridges art theory, technology, and cultural critique.
Key Activities: Co-organizer of the Stone Summer Theory Institute (2011), Tate Exchange Associate (2018-2021), and Trustee for the Council for Higher Education in Art and Design. His recent publications address AI’s impact on art, Barthesian semiotics, and interdisciplinary methodologies.
Lab/Groups: Leads the Data Image Lab and collaborates on projects like Structuralism and AI. His work often integrates experimental writing and curatorial practices.
