Dr. Sunghwan (Sunny) Jung is a Professor and Director of Graduate Studies in the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering at Cornell University's College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. He holds a Ph.D. in Physics from the University of Texas at Austin and has conducted postdoctoral research at NYU and MIT. His research focuses on interdisciplinary studies at the intersection of fluid dynamics, biology, and mathematics, exploring phenomena such as animal behavior, plant physiology, and environmental interactions. Dr. Jung’s work emphasizes the development of bio-inspired engineering solutions, such as fluid-pumping systems and eco-friendly materials. He teaches courses on bio-robotics and engineering design, training students in multidisciplinary approaches.
Key research areas include biofluid dynamics, nonlinear dynamics, and the mechanics of biological systems interacting with fluids. Notable awards include the NSF Mid-Career Award (2021), ASME-FEDSM Video Presentation Award (2021), and multiple teaching and research recognitions. His lab, the Bio-Inspired Fluid Lab, investigates topics like raindrop impact on leaves, handclap acoustics, and microplastic filtration. Dr. Jung’s contributions span academic leadership, innovative pedagogy, and impactful research addressing environmental and biological challenges.
