Dr. Sung Bae is a Professor of Finance and Chair of the Department of Finance at Bowling Green State University (BGSU) within the Schmidthorst College of Business. He holds the Fred E. Scholl Endowed Chair in Finance and Insurance (2021–2024) and previously held the Ashel G. Bryan/Huntington Bank Professorship (2008–2014 and 2000–2005). His research focuses on corporate finance, international finance, exchange rate risk management, and related party transactions. He has published over 70 peer-reviewed articles in top finance journals and received numerous awards, including 14 best paper awards and BGSU’s Robert A. Patton Scholastic Achievement Award (five-time recipient). His work explores topics like corporate diversification, foreign currency borrowing, and hedging strategies during financial crises.
Education: PhD in Finance from the University of Florida (1987), MBA from Michigan State University (1983), B.S.B.A. from Korea University (1980).
Research interests span corporate governance, exchange rate exposure management, and the impact of political reforms on state-owned enterprises. His recent studies analyze high-pressure political reforms in China and the role of related-party transactions in mitigating exchange rate risks.
Grants include APEC Finance & Development Program, Korea Research Foundation, and US Department of Education grants. He serves on editorial boards of eight journals and has led executive education programs globally. His articles frequently address cross-border financial strategies, corporate social responsibility, and the interplay between sales growth and diversification.
Professional roles include past presidency of the Korea America Finance Association (KAFA) and leadership in BGSU’s Financial Planning Program and Business International Education initiatives.
