Sung-Ae Lee is a Lecturer in the School of International Studies at Macquarie University. She holds two PhDs: one in English Literature (Macquarie University) and another in Asian Studies (Macquarie University), alongside MA degrees in English and Linguistics, and a BA in English. Her research focuses on East Asian literature, film, and television, particularly Korean cultural narratives, exploring themes like cultural ideologies, trauma, diaspora, and adaptation studies. She has supervised multiple doctoral theses in areas such as film adaptation and cultural identity.
Her teaching includes courses on visual cultures, intercultural perspectives, and global Asian popular culture. She led the 2022-2024 project Narrating Anxiety: East Asian Cinema in the Twenty-first Century. Her work frequently appears in journals like Verbeia and Acta Koreana, and she has contributed to media discussions on Korean cultural phenomena, including Squid Game and diaspora literature.
Her research outputs span over two decades, with a focus on South Korean cinema’s portrayal of social issues, trauma, and family structures. She actively engages in peer review for journals like Frontiers in Communication and Global Storytelling.
