Professor Sunetra Gupta holds the position of Professor of Theoretical Epidemiology at the University of Oxford and serves as Section Director of Graduate Studies (Admissions). She leads the Evolutionary Ecology of Infectious Disease Lab, focusing on understanding pathogen diversity evolution in malaria, influenza, and bacterial meningitis using mathematical models. Her work bridges epidemiological theory with empirical data from field and laboratory collaborations. Beyond academia, she explores the intersection of science with literature and public communication, as seen in her reissued novel Memories of Rain.
Her research emphasizes immune-driven pathogen evolution and the application of agent-based models to study infectious disease dynamics in complex systems like poultry production networks. Recent studies address SARS-CoV-2 variant emergence, vaccine impact on pneumococcal carriage, and dengue/Zika interactions in Brazil. She advocates for evidence-based public health policies, including the controversial Great Barrington Declaration on pandemic management.
Collaborators include postdoctoral researchers like Dr. Francesco Pinotti and Dr. Hany Zinad. Her work is disseminated through high-impact journals and platforms like the Indian Express. Contact: email or via her personal website.
