Sundari Johansen Hurwitt

Sundari Johansen Hurwitt is Assistant Professor at California Institute of Integral Studies in the School of Consciousness and Transformation, teaching in Ecology/Spirituality/Religion and Women's Spirituality programs. Her research examines gender, embodiment, and ritual in South Asian traditions with focus on Tantra, Shaktism, and goddess worship.

Primary research investigates kumārī (pre-menarche virgin) worship in Kaula Tantrism through textual analysis and ethnographic fieldwork in Northeast India. Publications analyze ritual practices, decolonial frameworks, and feminist reinterpretations of religious narratives.

Fieldwork contributions include co-developing manuscript archives at Kāmākhyā Dhām and documenting women's devotional music. Pedagogically advances integral feminist methods emphasizing embodiment and collaborative learning models.
