Sunanda Dissanayake is a Professor and Chair of the Civil and Environmental Engineering Department at Kennesaw State University (KSU), where she oversees academic programs, budgets, and faculty management. Previously, she served as a Professor of Civil Engineering and Associate Dean of the Graduate School at Kansas State University (K-State). She holds a Ph.D. from the University of South Florida, a Master’s from Asian Institute of Technology (Thailand), and a bachelor’s from the University of Moratuwa (Sri Lanka).
Her research focuses on transportation engineering, highway safety, and traffic management, with over 55 journal papers and 170+ conference presentations. Major projects include analyzing crash factors, speed limits, and safety infrastructure effectiveness. She has been funded by USDOT, state DOTs, and University Transportation Centers. Awards include the Fulbright Award, ASCE Fellowship, and multiple teaching/research accolades at K-State.
Professionally, she chairs the Transportation Safety Committee of ASCE/T&DI, serves on TRB committees, and edits two journals. As K-State’s Associate Dean, she managed graduate student recruitment, program quality, and professional development initiatives. Her work bridges civil engineering with interdisciplinary challenges like sustainable agriculture and community resilience in Sri Lanka’s irrigation systems.
