Professor Sun-Ki Chai is a sociologist at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa, bridging sociology and computer science through interdisciplinary research. He holds a PhD in Political Science (Stanford, 1994), MS in Computer Science (Stanford, 1984), and BS in Mathematical Science (Stanford, 1983). His career spans academia, tech industry, and journalism, returning to academia with a focus on sociological theory, cultural interactions, and identity-based conflicts. He teaches courses on race/ethnicity, social problems, sociological theory, and Asian development.
Research interests include integrating computational methods into social science theories, particularly analyzing cultural impacts on political/economic development in the Asia-Pacific region. He advocates leveraging UH’s resources to address Hawaii’s economic challenges and engages with Korean-American communities.
